Your New Year’s Resolution Horoscope for 2025

I’ll cut to the chase: astrologically, there’s nothing special about the midnight that brings us into the new year. Western calendars are civil, meaning they are based on codified, community standards rather than astronomical events.

What’s to Come in the Next Astrological Year

The astrological near year begins at the precise moment of the Vernal Equinox around March 21 each year. If you were standing at the equator, at this moment the Sun would be passing directly overhead – giving even and equal light to the Southern and Northern Hemispheres (which is why this is called an equinox, which comes from the Latin meaning equal night).

This is retained somewhat in our names for the latter months – “October” is the eighth month when reckoned from March, “November” the ninth, “December” the tenth. For astrological indications of the year ahead for the collective, this is where astrologers turn.

When we want to explore something more personal, we look to the day when the Sun returns to its exact birth position with respect to Earth. This is called a solar return and it falls within a day of one’s calendarized birthday, marking the start of an individual’s new year.

While January 1 doesn’t hold astrological significance, it does hold cultural significance. It is at this time that we celebrate themes of renewal – very common symbolism of Capricorn season, as the days start getting longer after the winter solstice. We make vows to ourselves, cook and eat traditional foods, mind our first activities stepping into the new year – and we can consider what message the heavens have for us as we step into that moment.

Your New Year’s Resolution Horoscope for 2025

Aries

You might be feeling a compelling draw to pull back, to reserve yourself at this moment. Do what feels right – but remember that there are valuable things out there that will require you to put yourself forward and act. A great season lies ahead with your friends, though a challenge lies there too. Are you engaging in your friendships with intention lately? Everyone is getting hit this year with the Jupiter/Saturn square. For you, it appears to point to where you were a bit too optimistic, and an opportunity was missed, a promise left open – likely involving sibling relationships, communication, or travel. It isn’t too late to turn that ship around, and I think by summer you’ll be a more comfortable side of things.

Taurus

This New Year, it would not surprise me if your resolutions were principally in a career focus. Venus is in your 10th house, but near the end of its sign, suggesting there has been a long period of progressive wins, modest wins perhaps but favorable. Now the Moon comes to oppose Mars across your 10th and 4th house axis: a change needs to be made, and it looks like it’s going to take some effort. Career is a likely manifestation point, but many things are within these houses. So, consider other places the symbolism may land: parents, home and family, anything divided along the lines of public vs private. This will also be a good year for financial resolutions – for some to get things back on track, and for others, to build on what they’ve started.

Gemini

For most Geminis, 2024 was a rough year, no way around it. The reverberations of the strain are still close, although you’re now through the worst of it and will be building from strength to strength. A test of that strength will come in the summer, and you’ll be ready. I’d encourage you to consider the ways in which you might’ve internalized the disappointments of the past year. Could your resolutions this year be a helpful place to pivot into seeing things through kinder eyes? You have to go slow to go fast – paradox it may be, but an adage of elders for good reason. Make time for fun. Permit yourself to lighten up. Remember you are the delight in the lives of many, and there’s always something new out there to discover.

Cancer

This summer, Saturn will enter your 10th house of career. It might be a good idea to consider how you can get ahead of the typically limiting influence that that transit tends to bring. But at the same time, Jupiter enters Cancer – summer 2025 to summer 2026 should be luckier than usual. Until then: has money been going out just about as fast as it’s been coming in? Let me relay how the astrology describes the problem. It’s shown through an opposition of the Moon in Capricorn opposing Mars retrograde in Leo, and its message is threefold: are you (a) undervaluing your own earnings, (b) spending quickly or with disorganized thought, and/or (c) making larger-than-necessary purchases, perhaps motivated by ostentation? If this doesn’t already describe you, this indicates that it could, so extra caution is advised when making financial decisions this year.

Leo

You might be coming into this new year on the back of some drama you’d rather do without. The good news is that you should be able to soon put it behind you, but it might be worth investigating: what changes can you make to minimize the chances that you have repeats of unpleasant themes in 2025? The astrology of the new year encourages a rebuilding of relationships, re-balancing elements in interpersonal dynamics that you’d like to see change. Lots of career opportunity shown here, too, so if you’ve been looking for the year to initiate change of that nature, it might be worth incorporating into your resolutions! Be sure to give your goals for the year some thought; it’s possible, with so much going on now, that you’ve not set that time aside yet.

Virgo

It might be a good idea this year to consider the role of romance in your life. Do you allow enough space for it? Saturn has been in your 7th house of relationships for years, but will move off by summer. With Venus just about to enter that house, some warmth and excitement returns – perhaps from somewhere you did not expect! Jupiter has been in your 10th house of career, squaring that Jupiter, and that might’ve caused some things to stall professionally that might otherwise have gone ahead. This year, things change, and your redoubled efforts here will be rewarded. Consider also where small habits might be chipping away at your overall day-to-day satisfaction – are there adjustments to your routine that you’re ready to commit to?

Libra

I say this with no intention of being trite – it does look as though your experiences over the past year have been largely balanced, with memorable ups and downs. This is the time to reflect over what you’ve learned through these experiences. What went well that you want to see grow? What would you like to try differently? I’d recommend considering where you might learn something new – it looks as though something horizon-expanding has been calling you, but it hasn’t yet received your full attention. This could be a good year for change like this! Saturn moves into your 7th house of relationships this summer, so it would also be good to consider ways to pour back into your committed partnerships at this time, both romantic and professional, and to deepen your understanding of what you need to see reciprocated.

Scorpio

Your planetary ruler, Mars, is retrograde at the start of the civil year, and receiving the opposition of the Moon. I imagine you are in the middle of a lot of change and transformation in your life at this time, and it can feel like quite a lot is coming on at once. Make sure to keep your day-to-day life in balance. This way you are left with the emotional and mental bandwidth to process the new directions you are assessing. Have you been having enough private retreat time? “Treat yourself” as an idea has been a bit over-touted in the past few years, but that’s because it’s such a relatable lack to experience in our lives. This year, there is good luck in investing in your private, inner life, and your home. Don’t pass it up!

Sagittarius

You, along with the other three mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Pisces), have been hammered hard by a long, protracted conflict borne out by Jupiter and Saturn. And, just like the other mutable signs, these days are coming to a reflective close. By summer, the scene will be different and you will understand yourself in new ways. For now, I advise keeping your resolutions focused on things that are practical and manageable. We can over-promise and under-deliver to ourselves, too, and over time this wears away the confidence and trust we have in ourselves. I wouldn’t be surprise if you’ve questioned yourself in big ways this past year; but a new day is ahead, and making goals you know you can achieve is a great way to boost yourself up for the many opportunities that astrology suggests lay ahead.

Capricorn

Yours is a sign that’s not afraid to brave it alone. Few have the tenacity of spirit and the sheer grit it takes to keep oneself in motion, especially against resistance. This year, it might be worth exploring where you stand to benefit by including a colleague, a neighbor, a sibling, or someone close. If you’ve been paying down debts, the astrology of the new year appears to supercharge those efforts to help you reach your financial goals faster. I’m also seeing good prospects of relocating this year for you, somewhere familiar but new, if that’s been something you’ve been weighing. Career opportunities that require travel also make use of this good astrological signature, and there’s nothing quite like opening new doors and forging new pathways for a future you.

Aquarius

It certainly looks like there might be romantic desire in your heart right now, Aquarius, but the time doesn’t look ripe – at least, not for making that a sole point of focus. I’m seeing good financial prospects from solidifying skills you’ve been developing for years. The same with international travel experiences, the expense you might bear to manage such travel looks likely to return threefold for your trouble. Are you dreaming of making a big change professionally? Not a bad time to move in that direction, and your resolution could be a good place to state with intention what it is you’re looking for. Focus on improving the facts of your life, and you’ll notice that the extra bits you hope for might find a natural, easy path in.

Pisces

You should be optimistic this New Year’s, Pisces – Venus is just breaths away from entering your sign. She will help alleviate some of the pressure that Saturn has been exerting for the past two years. You can help the optimism materialize by picking up new hobbies and creative activities that help you express yourself (especially writing and art). I’m also going to encourage you to look at your day-to-day habits, your nutrition, and exercise. These are areas where you can make some meaningful gains, even if you’re already starting from a good place. It would not surprise me if romance finds you this year. But, I don’t think you’ll have to go searching for it – just be your charming self, and let’s see who that attracts. If you’re already in a relationship, consider how you’d like to add some spice to keep you both growing this year.
